Srimad Bhagavat Gita commentary chapter 14 verse 5

 Chapter 14 verse 5 

“O mighty-armed Arjuna, the material energy consists of three guas (modes)—sattva (goodness), rajas (passion), and tamas (ignorance). These modes bind the eternal soul to the perishable body. 

Bhagwan is going to explain the constituent of material energy which causes all different actors and actions in this Universe. These constituents are the 3 modes of action-gunas or behaviors. Goodness or purity called sattva; Passion or aggression called Rajas; Ignorance or intertia called tamas. These 3 modes bind the eternal soul-jivatma to the perishable material energy called prakriti.
