Chapter 13 verse 22
“When the puruṣha (individual soul) seated in prakṛiti (the material energy) desires to enjoy the three guṇas, attachment to them becomes the cause of its birth in superior and inferior wombs.”
Purusha
is the individual soul which when enamoured by the prakriti, the material energy
of the 13 instruments gets attached to the material desires and engages in
action of the body, mind, intellect and ego. Depending on the actions, the soul
has to take on future lives either in exalted or debilitated families and
wombs. This sloka illustrates 2 important concepts of sanatana dharma- presence
of maya (material energy) and the cycle of birth and death due to laws of
karma.
